The Sewing Box

The sewing box has long been a tool of the domesticated woman, a space to store tools and materials, but also a space that offers the possibility of transformation. For many years this transformation was a means of female agency (Gordon, 2007), a mechanism to create change and demonstrate self-actualisation (Parker, 2010). Through the Instavention it became clear that this is still the case, remaking together becoming a means of connecting, comforting and creating relationships and identity.  Subverting the sewing box to become a stage, it becomes a performative but personal space, much as Instagram is for the participants, becoming a platform for the women that participated in this study to connect through animal avatars.
